The threat of a “smoke-belching monstrosity” could once again hang over Perth, a local politician has suggested.
Perth and North Perthshire MP Pete Wishart expressed concern that Grundon Waste Management intended to submit a revised proposal for an incinerator on Shore Road.
Mr Wishart said he was “responding to reports,” but was last night unable to comment further on any plans Grundon might have.
No-one from the firm was available to comment.
There have been several plans for the site, near to Perth’s harbour area, which have caused concern.
Thousands objected after it was revealed council officials had granted outline planning consent for development in 2006.
The proposed scheme was a £100m incineration plant with a 260ft chimney stack that would have dwarfed a number of historic buildings.
Following a huge public campaign, full planning permission was refused by Perth and Kinross Council, though councillors stopped short of revoking the outline consent.
Grundon’s attempt to have the local authority’s decision overturned failed in November when a Scottish Government reporter rejected its appeal.
The firm has said in the past that it continues to have plans for its existing operation at Shore Road, but not an incinerator.
It does retain a right of appeal to the Court of Session, but Perth and Kinross Council has said there is little prospect of such a challenge, given the reporter’s reasons for refusal.
Mr Wishart told the firm that an incinerator was not wanted in Perth.
“In my view, this is completely wrong for this site and I am confident that any plans Grundon put forward will be rejected out of hand,” he said.
“The council must, of course, follow due process, but I am sure that they will be robust in their opposition to any application.
“I think it is time that Grundon got the message that the incinerator is not welcome in Perth and they should give up.”
