Perthshire’s quirky sporting heritage was again apparent at the weekend as the sound of smashing glass echoed through the Carse of Gowrie.
While Birnam Highland Games is the home of the World Haggis Eating Championships, the Cairn o’ Mohr winery’s international bottle smashing championship is gaining increasing notoriety.
Now in its ninth year, the event attracted competitors from all over Tayside and Fife.
With men throwing from 13 metres and ladies from nine, each competitor is supplied with seven empty Cairn o’ Mohr fruit wine bottles.
With a steady hand, they then hurl the bottles at a stone (‘The Rock’) dangling from a frame (‘The Thing’).
A direct hit that is, a smashed bottle must be repeated in order to secure victory.
