Perth provost Liz Grant has raised eyebrows with a surprise appearance on a bizarre Radio 1 gameshow.
Mrs Grant, who is best known in her home city for taking a lead role in civic engagements, was a surprise guest on a Guess Who-style quiz hosted by drivetime DJ Greg James.
The weekly feature, Mayor of Where, is played by Greg and newsman Chris Smith.
They invite mayors on to the airwaves and ask a series of questions in a bid to guess their town or city.
In Liz’s case, the game was renamed Provost of Whovost, given that there are no mayors in Scotland a fact that was acknowledged with a loud claxon.
During the brief appearance, former health worker Mrs Grant managed to squeeze in a plug for Perth’s Black Watch Museum and joked that she would need a passport to get to Fife.
She introduced herself to listeners with the words: “I am Liz the provost, the provost of whovost.”
Asked how far she was from Britain’s biggest mountain, she said: “At least half an hour” although it’s actually nearer two-and-a-half hours by car.
She went on to reveal that her mystery home was not a university town but does boast two main campuses for a major university.
Asked for a tea room recommendation, she suggested the one at the Black Watch Museum.
And as her hosts narrowed down their guesses to Tayside, she explained that Fife was across the border.
“We don’t live in Fife, so I would need a passport to get in,” she said.
At the end of the quiz, Mrs Grant thanked the DJ and accidentally set off a bleeping noise on her phone, prompting DJ Greg to ask: “Did she just swear?”
Although Mrs Grant, who was a councillor for several years, might not immediately seem like Radio 1 material, she has rubbed shoulders with the likes of Peter Andre and Billy Ocean during the city’s Christmas lights ceremonies.
She appeared on Wednesday afternoon’s show shortly after unveiling the results of a make-over at Perth’s historic Salutation Hotel.
