A Scone woman who involved herself in all aspects of life and leisure in the town and in Perth has died at the age of 100.
The daughter of an Edinburgh jeweller, Martha Rhodes, known to all as Mattie, moved to Perth in 1927.
At the age of 14 she left school and joined fashion firm McEwans, working there for 13 years and eventually becoming the head buyer for the company.
Marriage to George Rhodes, whom she met at Perth Drama Club, took her away from the firm and together they had two children, Anne and Martin, with whom they lived at Nether Friarton House.
Mr Rhodes was the City Factor of Perth and was eventually awarded the MBE for his services to housing.
Mrs Rhodes was a member of Perth and District Rifle Club, competing at regional level.
She also played golf, tennis and badminton, though her real loves were curling and bowls and she was long part of the West End and Scone bowling clubs, becoming club champion and eventually an honorary member at the latter.
Together with her husband, she ran the West of Scotland Society and started and organised the Perth Old Time Dancing Club.
She was also a member of the Women’s Voluntary Service and drove the meals on wheels van.
In her later years she joined the Old Folks Club, Scone Carpet Bowling Club and the Whist Club.
George, her great love, died in 1993 but Mattie continued to live in Den Road until 2007 when she moved to Hanover in Scone.
She is survived by five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
