A blitz on leftover referendum posters, placards and stickers could be carried out across Perthshire.

Local authority chiefs are being urged to remove campaign material which is still attached to lamp-posts, benches and bus shelters.

The move follows a high-profile row which led to tenant Jason Brown being forced to remove Yes banners from the balcony of his Caledonian Road flat.

The 26-year-old SNP supporter agreed to take down the four signs after being told of a little-known law which states that all political campaign posters must be removed within two weeks of polling day.

Now councillor Alexander Stewart is calling on Perth and Kinross Council to have the remaining Yes and No signs removed from council properties and street furniture throughout the district.

In a letter to chief executive Bernadette Malone, he said: “As an area which prides itself on its beautiful civic spaces and attracts many visitors, it is important that we ensure we address littering and flyposting and I am sure you will be as keen as I am to see this situation addressed.”

Mr Stuart said last night: “We pride ourselves on doing all we can to keep our area looking as tidy and well presented as possible for visitors and locals to enjoy.

“I hope that the chief executive will use the powers she has available to her to ensure these referendum campaign stickers are removed early in the new year and I am sure this will be welcomed by businesses and members of the public.”
