Bid to draw visitors to Perthshire with Tummel and Tay Festival

Bid to draw visitors to Perthshire with Tummel and Tay Festival

Council leaders are serving up a feast of mouth-watering events and celebrations aimed at luring thousands of visitors to Perthshire throughout 2015.

After a year that saw the region thrust into the international spotlight thanks to the Ryder Cup, the local authority hopes it can continue to draw in the crowds with its Year of Food and Drink festivities.

The 12-month programme takes inspiration from the region’s seasonal larder and its variety of high-quality, independent producers.

A council spokeswoman said: “Visitors to the area will be spoiled for choice by an array of foodie experiences to choose from and events throughout the year, focusing on the local produce on offer.”

The Tummel and Tay Festival will return in May, following a successful debut in 2014. It will showcase food, drink and culture from Highland Perthshire. Last year’s line-up centred on whisky and boasted a food fair, live music, theatre performances and a photography exhibition.

In June the Solas Festival will take place. This family-friendly celebration of arts will mix music, theatre, literature and more with an emphasis on locally-produced food some of which is even grown in nearby fields.

September will see the return of the Scone Palace Chilli Festival, which will bring together producers from around the UK offering chilli-flavoured chocolates, jams and preserves, as well as a selection go home-grown chilli plants from the palace’s own gardens.

The organisers of Perth’s Farmers’ Market a popular fixture on the city’s events calendar are also planning their second annual food festival later in the year.

More events will be added to the calendar over the coming months, while extra effort will be made to promote existing distilleries, restaurants and producers to the widest possible audience.

People who visit the area for adventure sports such as mountain biking and water rafting will be targeted as part of the campaign.

The local campaign which is part of the wider Food and Drink Scotland 2015 drive, will be backed by the Scottish Government, EventScotland and VisitScotland.
