A TV series filmed across Perthshire and Fife could be Scotland’s answer to hit drama Game of Thrones.
That is according to VisitScotland, which now aims to capitalise on the country’s starring role in the highly anticipated new TV series, Outlander.
The adaptation of Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander books, which have sold more than 20 million copies, was filmed mostly on location, with film crews descending on Culross, Falkland and Doune Castle.
VisitScotland believes the 16-part series could turn the country into a magnet for TV fans and will encourage them to travel here for their own Outlander-style adventure after it airs next month in the US.
Outlander follows the story of Claire Randall, a married combat nurse from 1945, who is mysteriously swept back in time to the 18th-century Scottish Highlands, where she falls for Jamie a chivalrous warrior.
Actors Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe were among the stars at its Comic-Con 2014 premiere, along with Ronald D Moore, the executive producer who worked on Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Mr Moore said it was important to shoot the show in Scotland, adding: “This country has a particular quality to it. The landscape itself is a character in the show.”
VisitScotland chairman Mike Cantlay said: “The television series is potentially huge for Scotland and could well be our answer to Game of Thrones.”
