Mrs Muriel Thomson, who played an important role in community life in Blairgowrie and Rattray, has died.
A service of thanksgiving for her life was held in Blairgowrie Parish Church. Born in Cardiff in 1924, Mrs Thomson was the middle child of five.
As she progressed through school the Second World War broke out and when she turned 18 she applied to join the Women’s Royal Naval Service (Wrens).
She was accepted and posted to Campbeltown in Argyll. There she met her future husband Eric Thomson when he was sent there with his ship for mine training.
The two wed at Colinton, Edinburgh, in 1947. They returned to Blairgowrie and Rattray, which was to be Mrs Thomson’s home for the rest of her life.
Eric’s sudden death at the age of 44 in 1966 left Mrs Thomson to bring up her family of a son and two daughters.
As her children grew older, Mrs Thomson developed a number of social, cultural, and civic interests.
She became a director of the family farming companies and supported many organisations in the town until recently, including the Cottage Hospital, Blairgowrie Players, the Blethers Group. She was a founder member of the Civic Trust, supported the Tayside group of Old War Wrens and was a keen church member.
