The second of three design contracts to complete the dualling of the A9 has been awarded.

Engineering firm Jacobs will be responsible for the 32-mile stretch between the pass of Birnam and Glen Garry.

The Scottish Government has committed to dualling the Perth to Inverness route “as early as possible”.

The first contract to design the 26-mile stretch of road between Glen Garry and Dalraddy was awarded in May.

Each contract is worth between £40m to £60m and represents part of the largest road infrastructure project in Scotland’s history.

Jacobs will start work on the section of the route nearest to Perth next month, with the third and final design contract to dual the A9 between Dalraddy and Inverness expected to be awarded by the end of the year.

Transport Minister Keith Brown said the announcement was “another major step forward” and underlined the Government’s “determination to bring forward benefits to road users” as soon as possible.
