Membership of the SNP in Dundee has more than quadrupled since the independence referendum, it has been revealed.
Two hundred new members attended a branch meeting in the city last night, a fraction of the 1,700 who have signed up to the party since the vote.
Previously the figure was around 500 but a 340% hike has taken it to 2,200 after Dundee gave the biggest backing for independence.
City West MSP Joe FitzPatrick said: “We are seeing a new wave of democratic engagement and activism, which the Yes campaign inspired. It shows no signs of stopping and the enthusiasm and energy of our new members will make us an even more powerful voice for Scotland.”
A party source said applications were still arriving daily, with many more still to be processed.
The post-referendum reaction are “crazy” and he added that 300 members were crammed into Chamber East.
Reports also emerged SNP membership in Perth has shot up from 57 to 202 since referendum day.
Dundee East MP Stewart Hosie added: “The more substantial the new powers that we can win for Scotland, including, crucially, job-creating powers, the faster Scotland will move forward.”
