John hendry, one of the founders of the Perth Festival of the Arts, has died at the age of 71.
A retired chartered quantity surveyor, Mr Hendry was one of several Perthshire Junior Chamber of Commerce members closely involved in the creation of the annual arts event, which was first staged in 1972.
A partner with Fair City surveyors Hardies before retiring 16 years ago, Mr Hendry served as secretary, long-time treasurer and committee member as the festival mushroomed from modest beginnings to play a key role on the Perth cultural scene.
Born in Broughty Ferry and brought up in Monifieth, he attended Dundee High School and embarked on the surveying path in Dundee before moving to Edinburgh, where he qualified as a quantity surveyor.
While living in Dunfermline, Mr Hendry joined Hardies and relocated to Perth in 1969 as the partner charged with setting up an office that has expanded down the years.
Mr Hendry was a long-time member of Blairgowrie Golf Club and was also a keen walker.
He received a long-service baton from provost Liz Grant for his 25 years as a member of the Society of High Constables of the City of Perth, and was a member of Perth Civic Trust.
Mr Hendry is survived by his wife of 47 years, Sue, daughters Jenny and Lindsey, their husbands James and Dave, and grandchildren Heather and James.
A service of thanksgiving will be held at Perth Crematorium on Friday.
