Nearly £9 million will be spent upgrading the Victorian-era Alyth Primary School.
Plans are being drawn up for a major overhaul of the A-listed building, which dates back to the 19th Century.
It has been identified as having the highest maintenance requirement of any primary in Perth and Kinross.
Alloa-based Marshall Construction has been appointed as principal contractor for the job, which will involve creating a new-build primary around the existing building.
If all goes to plan, the new-look school is expected to open by summer 2016.
Perth and Kinross Council has set aside £8.8m for the work, scheduled to begin in March.
Gordon Saunders is heading up the design team for Marshall Construction.
He said: “We hope to have exciting news shortly about the design of this innovative new school, which will incorporate an existing 1800 A-listed building into the design.
“We are delighted to be delivering Alyth Primary School and as a company we have a strong track record of delivering high quality and best value schools and public buildings with lasting community benefits.
“We hope that the construction of the new primary school and community wing will be a learning experience for the children, who will perhaps base some of their curriculum activities on the construction of their new school.
“We hope to involve the local community through milestones within the construction process,” Mr Saunders said.
The company has looked at several design options for the new building, which is likely to see a modern block built as a wing to the existing school.
A planning application is expected to be lodged in the coming weeks.
The contract is part of an investment of nearly £80m in schools across Perth and Kinross.
This will include substantial upgrades at Perth Grammar School and installing an all-weather pitch at Perth Academy.
New primaries will also be built at Crieff and Oakbank, with replacements planned for Kinross and Tullock primaries.
