Treasure hunters descended upon Perthshire at the weekend to attend a new event that aimed to build upon the region’s growing reputation as the geocaching capital of Scotland.
The first Cateran Trail GeoTour Tryst was held at the Kirkmichael Hotel on Saturday to mark International Geocaching Day. Perthshire has increasingly become a go-to destination for the pastime since the region hosted the UK Mega Cache in 2010.
The treasure hunt-style game sees participants use Global Positioning Systems (GPS) to seek out a cache that has been hidden at a specific location.
There are more than five million registered players worldwide and more than two million caches hidden across the globe.
Geocachers increasingly plan days out, weekend breaks and even annual holidays around “cache rich” environments and this has led to a new tourism initiative the GeoTour.
Earlier this year the Perth and Kinross Countryside Trust, which manages the Cateran Trail, launched the first UK-based GeoTour to encourage tourists to the Cateran Trail in Perthshire.
And a steady stream of visitors has since been visiting east Perthshire for short stays to take part.
The weekend’s open house event enabled participants to get together socially and also enjoy the challenge of tracking down some of the great caches across the area.
