Perth and Kinross Council is determined to attract new industries and create jobs, despite the difficult economic climate, says Provost Liz Grant.
Addressing the 200-strong audience at the annual dinner of the Society of High Constables of the City of Perth in the Salutation Hotel, she said: “The Chancellor has made his autumn statement, the austerity continues and councils across the country continue to require to make huge savings from their budgets in our case, we may have to find something in the region of £53 million over the next four years and beyond.
“This is in addition to the savings already made every year since 2010.
“Our services continue to be highly prioritised, austerity not withstanding, we remain focused on delivering a vibrant, dynamic city that will attract medium to large companies to relocate here.
“Meanwhile, we remain a low-pay economy and we desperately need a broader spectrum of opportunity for our young people so that they feel that they have a stake in their own country.”
Councillor Grant said the Perth city development board is reviewing the city plan with a view to including additional projects to aid growth and the economy.
“Investment in additional roads infrastructure is essential to support the north west expansion of Perth together with investment in additional public realm improvements and cultural attractions to the city centre have already been identified as priorities,” she went on.
Mrs Grant also touched on notable events from the past year, including St Johnstone’s victory in the Scottish Cup, the visit of the Earl and Countess of Strathearn, and the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles, which attracted global attention.
“I think that you will all agree that we have had an amazing year in Perth and Kinross,” she told the audience.
