A Highland Perthshire community has been dealt a blow with the closure of a putting green despite a last ditch effort to save it.
The Aberfeldy facility was popular in the summer months, with its toilet facilities used by people travelling in coach parties. Efforts were made to save the green after Perth and Kinross Council announced cuts would have to be made in 2011.
Initial options were looked at, with the possibility of the neighbouring Aberfeldy Golf Club using the putting green as part of the golf experience in the town.
However, after careful scrutiny the club decided that it would not pursue the interest further.
Optimism rose when a local businessman ran the putting green on an informal basis for the 2012/13 season, but he revealed last year that he was no longer interested in running the facility.
As a result, it was agreed to advertise for a new operator to run the green and pavilion on a three-year lease to secure its immediate future.
However, it appears that the putting green and pavilion will now close due to no one being prepared to take over the running of the tourist draw.
A council spokesperson said: “Perth and Kinross Council would advise that, following efforts to seek an operator for the putting green in Aberfeldy, there have unfortunately been no expressions of interest made to take on the facility.
“As a result, the facility will remain closed for the foreseeable future. The site will receive fortnightly grass cutting and the building will be kept wind and watertight until a further decision is made about the facility’s future in due course.”
She added: “The council regrets any disappointment which may result from the closure of the putting green.”
