Olympic canoeist Tim Baillie is to hold a coaching session as part of Perth’s Adventure Festival.

Baillie, who scooped a gold medal in the men’s two-person event at the London games, will take learners through the basics of the sport at Willowgate fisheries.

Baillie and his partner Etienne Stott became Olympic champions when they won the C2 Canoe final in 2012.

The Perth session will be one of the first in a diary of sports events and talks which will take place in and around the Fair City between June 13 and 15.

The festival will culminate in a stunning Dragon Boat race on the river Tay at 6pm on the Sunday night.

Before that, there will be the chance to take part in archery and bushcraft sessions, as well as a bungee jump and white water rafting.

Weather permitting, hot air balloon flights will take participants high above Perth. Dave Girling, Perth and Kinross Council’s outdoor education officer, is looking forward to introducing people to a host of new experiences.

He hopes that up to 3,000 people will take part over the three days.

He said: “The festival is unique. You couldn’t do a lot of these activities if you went to a private provider. You couldn’t take a zip line down the High Street, and there’s a canoeing session with Tim Baillie you can canoe with an Olympian, you couldn’t do that anywhere else.

“Adventure is curiosity and, if you are curious, we want you to take part in the festival.”

Previous events have been based in and around Aberfeldy but organisers have chosen to shift the focus to Perth for 2014 in order to help visitors gain a greater insight into the entire region’s offering.
