Councillors have unanimously approved plans to allow Aldi to take over an empty shop unit in Perth.
The budget supermarket had applied for a change of use for the unit at the Highland Gateway, beside Inveralmond Industrial Estate, to allow it to sell groceries from the site.
The store had been earmarked for Caithness Glass but the company relocated to Crieff.
The unit was then split into two, with Marks and Spencer taking over one half. It opened last year, helping to boost footfall to the site significantly.
Aldi hopes to cash in on this success by opening its second store in the area. The motion to approve Aldi’s plans was proposed by Councillor Callum Gillies, who said: “I am happy to see something going into there at last.”
It was sconded by Councillor Alan Livingstone, who said he was “delighted” by the move.
The councillors also approved proposed changes to the outside of the unit, allowing Aldi to install a loading pod for its delivery lorries, a refrigeration unit and trolley enclosures.
