The future of a much-loved building has been secured thanks to the determination of a Highland Perthshire community.
After a five-year campaign, Aberfeldy Town Hall has been handed back to local residents. Perth and Kinross Council declared the venue surplus to requirements after the completion of the Breadalbane Community Campus.
There was strong public feeling that it should remain available for local use, however, and more than 80 people backed proposals to take over the hall.
By February 2009, the Aberfeldy Town Hall Steering Group (ATHSG) was formed, with members tasked with exploring the feasibility of taking the building into community ownership.
Their efforts were backed by Perth and Kinross Council and the Development Trust Association Scotland, with both organisations keen to see it as the first community asset transfer for the local authority.
Although the steering group was disbanded within 18 months, Locus Breadalbane took over the campaign and was given a licence to operate the hall from May 2011.
It applied for a grant of £75,000 from the SSE Griffin and Calliacher Community Fund to buy the hall.
Perth and Kinross Council was granted permission to dispose of the building in February, allowing the sale to proceed.
The hall will officially be handed over to the community of Aberfeldy during a special ceremony on May 2 at 7.30pm. Provost Liz Grant will present a symbolic key and the event is open to all and will finish with a fundraising auction.
Plans have been drawn up to provide the hall with disabled access, moveable seating and improved heating and insulation.
