St John’s Kirk open day reveals rarely-seen views of Perth

Hundreds of people visited St John’s Kirk in Perth at the weekend to take advantage of a rare opportunity to get a bird’s eye view of the Fair City.
Guests were escorted to the top of the 150ft spire, which dates from the early 1500s, to take in the view.
On the way, they were able to see some of the church’s 63 bells, including the impressive John Knox bell, which bears an image of the preacher.
A pair of professional pianists played a variety of classical tunes and there was also the chance to see carillonneur Dr Ian Cassells playing the church bells.
Also included in the open day were displays depicting two key moments in church life baptism and marriage.
A beautiful white gown and veil were placed beside a wall showing a number of wedding photographs, with the earliest dating from 1857.
Jennifer Archibald, who chairs the stewardship committee at the church and helped run the day, said: “The theme today is love the love for the church and for God.
“We have had lots of stories from people today, telling us about their relationship with St John’s.”
