A mystery donor has matched £20,000 raised for charity at a Perth event.
More than 5,000 people went through the gates at Perth racecourse for the annual Breakthrough Breast Cancer Ladies’ Day earlier this month, raising £20,612 for the charity.
However, that total has now been boosted to £41,224 thanks to an anonymous donor.
Niamh O’Shea from Breakthrough Breast Cancer said: “We truly value our charity partnership with Perth races and this has been our most successful fundraising year yet. We are proud to say we massively exceeded our target.
“Every penny raised this year is going towards our Dundee research programme, which aims to reduce the amount of surgery women with breast cancer need.
“On top of this, the grand total is being doubled by an anonymous donor. It’s thanks to the commitment from Perth races, the sponsors and our many Breakthrough volunteers we had out in force on the day that we have such a fantastic fundraising total to celebrate.”
Breast cancer is still the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in Scotland, affecting more than 4,500 women each year and killing 1,000 each year.
Sam Morsehead, Perth Racecourse manager, added: “The amount raised for Breakthrough Breast Cancer has touched us all and echoes the importance of the cause one that has or will touch all our hearts at some point.
“We have been working with Breakthrough for five years now and to have doubled our annual target of £10,000 is tremendous.
“Thanks must go to our organisers and sponsors and of course the customers.”
