Elena Baltacha's tennis potential was first spotted in Perth.

The tennis club in Perth where the potential of Elena Baltacha was spotted as a youngster is holding a charity event in her memory.

The former British number one tennis player lost her battle with liver cancer last month.

Elena grew up in Perth when her father, Sergei, played for St Johnstone.

Following her retirement from playing she had been focusing on a youth academy in her hometown of Ipswich, founded with her coach, Nino Severino, whom she married last year.

Appealing for the public to support the event, the president of Perth Tennis Club, Derek Brown, said: “As many of you will be aware, Elena Baltacha sadly lost her fight against liver cancer on May 4 this year.

“On Sunday there will be events held at tennis clubs all over the country under the umbrella of Rally for Bally to celebrate her life and achievements and to raise funds for the Elena Baltacha Foundation.

“Elena began her tennis career at Perth Tennis Club, where she was coached by Jimmy McKechnie and was a key member of our junior teams.”

The club’s Rally for Bally event runs from noon to 2.30pm. The event is open to everyone, members and non-members, in return for a donation.
