A man who sold a stolen ride-on lawnmower on eBay has been told to pay the buyer £1,450 in compensation.
Perth Sheriff Court heard how John Millar, 33, of Burnmouth Farm, Newtyle, had sold the device to a man in England, who then notified both eBay and the police about the transaction.
Depute fiscal Stuart Richardson said: “English police became involved and the item was recovered.”
Solicitor Jamie Baxter said his client had initially bought the mower from a seller on the Gumtree site and had travelled to the outskirts of Aberdeen for the transaction.
“My client’s family were there and he had a trailer.
“He only had it for three days as he was unable to use it due to his disabilities. So he then advertised it for sale on the eBay site.
“My client was aware that the item was ‘hot’.”
Millar admitted that between September 17 and 30 2012, at Hatchbank Lane, Gairneybank, Kinross, he reset a lawnmower that had been stolen.
Sentencing, Sheriff Michael Fletcher told Millar: “This was very ill-advised. I feel you should pay compensation as you knew the lawnmower had been stolen.”
