One of the highlights of the Perth racing calendar has taken place in the shape of Armed Forces Day.

The event marked the start of a series of summer meetings at the racecourse near Scone, which it is estimated will see around 15,000 people attend up to July 30.

Members of the armed forces and their families were allowed free entry to the race day. Run in conjunction with ABF the Soldiers’ Charity, the day included the Ardvreck School band, military brass band and provided the opportunity for people to explore army tanks.

In addition, the 7 Scots recruiting trailer was located at the site and the Dundee and Angus Army Cadets were present.

Perth Racecourse manager Sam Morshead yesterday said: “We started our Armed Forces Day five years ago and we like to think of it as recognition and a thank-you to the men and women from across our regiments.”

Charles Dunphie, regional director for ABF the Soldiers’ Charity, added: “I am delighted that Perth Races have so generously invited us back to continue with this race day.

“As well as fundraising, which allows the army’s national charity to help soldiers and their families in need locally, it also makes our members of the armed forces, both past and present, feel very welcome, which really help.

“It is a fantastic day out.”
