Hundreds of St Johnstone fans will fly out to Switzerland next week as their heroes continue their European adventures.
Club officials have contacted their opponents FC Luzern in a bid to secure additional tickets for the clash having sold out their initial allocation of 400.
The Europa League second qualifying round first leg tie takes place in Lucerne, in central Switzerland, on Thursday and there are high hopes Saints can better last year’s efforts.
They celebrated a superb victory over Norwegian giants Rosenborg, watched by a sizeable number of travelling fans and a strong home crowd, before a third qualifying round defeat on penalties after two bruising encounters with Minsk.
The level of backing the club will boast in Switzerland next week illustrates that the glory of their Scottish Cup win shines brightly.
Among their number will be fans who had ceased to attend matches on a regular basis but whose passion for the side has been rekindled.
“The tickets we got in were snapped up very quickly indeed,” said Saints administrator Paul Smith.
“It had been difficult to get a feel for just how many we needed it was a bit of a guesstimate.
“To some extent we are delighted that demand has been higher than we anticipated.”
Saints hope that more than 200 additional tickets will be available to buy at McDiarmid ahead of the game.
The club has, however, reminded supporters keen to travel that tickets will be available on the evening of the game at the Swisspoarena in Lucerne.
That is a far cry from last year’s Euro travels which saw fans faced with huge challenges as they attempted to secure last-minute visas to travel to Minsk.
Paul said: “Minsk was very difficult for the club and the fans due to the regrettable issues with securing visas.
“In the end, the team and officials only just made it by the skin of their teeth.”
The 2013-14 season was a triumphant one for St Johnstone, with another top-six finish and the first major trophy in the club’s 130-year history.
That stunning Scottish Cup win over Dundee United, secured thanks to goals from Steven Anderson and Steven MacLean, contributed to a major outpouring of pride in the team.
An estimated 20,000 Saints supporters packed Perth city centre to welcome their returning heroes as they paraded their silverware.
It may be too soon to gauge the impact of that success upon attendances as it’s likely to be mostly long-time fans that travel to the continent.
“Certainly the cup victory will not have done us any harm,” Paul added. “When our first home league game comes around and we host Luzern on home soil then hopefully we will see that the numbers have risen.”
