A Cetic fan who was thrown out of St Johnstone’s stadium for being drunk and abusive has been banned from every football ground in Scotland.
Perth Sheriff Court heard that Charles McManus, 25, of Muir Wynd, Baillieston, Glasgow, had drunk alcohol prior to boarding a Celtic supporters’ bus for the Scottish Premiership game which took place on August 13.
It was an evening match near the start of this season.
Depute fiscal Rebecca Kynaston said McManus was seen by match stewards “slumped” in the North Stand of the ground in a “drunken state” and they ejected him from the stadium.
“The accused’s eyes were glazed and his speech was slurred,” she said.
“He began to make threats towards stewards, telling one, ‘get your hands off me’, and was warned about his conduct.”
The court heard that police assisted the stewards but McManus then “faced up to” one of the officers, telling him he would “knock his head off”.
Solicitor Nicola Brown, defending, said McManus was drunk before he got on a supporters’ bus and then consumed more alcohol while on the vehicle.
“My client has absolutely no recollection of the event at all,” she said.
“He got through the turnstiles but didn’t get very far after that. He was cringing about this incident when we spoke about it.
“If he gets a banning order, he will not be able to enjoy his football for a while.”
On Tuesday, McManus admitted that on August 13 at McDiarmid Park, Crieff Road, Perth, he behaved in a threatening manner by repeatedly shouting and swearing and making threatening remarks.
He also pleaded guilty to a charge that on the same date and location he was drunk in a designated sports ground.
McManus was fined £500 and banned from entering any football ground in Scotland.
Part of the condition of the order includes him signing on at Maryhill Police Station in Glasgow.
Celtic went on to beat St Johnstone 3-0 that evening.
