Calls for a fitting tribute to the selfless action and sacrifice of “hero” aid worker David Haines are gathering momentum.
Friends and family are working to create a lasting memorial to the 44-year-old, who dedicated his life to humanitarian causes around the world.
On Monday, the Rev Jim Stewart led tributes to the 44-year-old at a ceremony at Perth Academy, where he had once been a pupil.
He was described as a man of care and compassion during the special assembly and as “an inspiration” and “true British hero”.
That is a view shared by Perth and North Perthshire MP Pete Wishart, who is also working to ensure he is “never forgotten”.
He said: “The response to the death of David Haines from the people of Perth has been truly incredible and it is only right and proper that we find a way to commemorate his remarkable life.
“David Haines is a true Perth hero someone who, the more we find out about, the more we want to make sure he is properly remembered.
“His death appalled the world but I hope that we, here in Perth, can find a way to remember his life.
“I will do everything I can to work with all of those who are looking to create a lasting memorial and make sure he is never forgotten in the city where he grew up.”
Mid Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser backed Mr Wishart’s call, saying: “I think that a tribute to Mr Haines is an excellent idea.
“He was someone who was well known in the Perth area and retained strong ties to the area through family and friends.
“I have no doubt that there would be a great deal of interest in a tribute and I would be very happy to support something in his memory.”
Locals have also made the call, with Abbie Withers, a pet groomer and animal behaviourist from Bridgend, saying: “His family deserve to see him recognised as quickly as possible.
“It’s so terribly sad that David lost his precious, caring life. I believe we ought to honour him and his family in Perth in some way he is a hero.
“He came from my home town and I feel so proud for all he gave.”
Mr Haines’ teenage daughter Bethany, who attends the academy, posted on a Facebook page dedicated to her dad to reveal she had been touched by the support she had received.
In another post, she said: “I think heroes exist but they don’t all show off in a stupid cape. This sounds really cheesy but I think my dad’s a hero.”
