Aberfeldy residents could be without a swimming pool for months after a leak was discovered in the pool at the Breadalbane Community Campus.

Breadalbane Campus opened to the public in December 2010, offering facilities described at the time as “second to none”.

Its pool had been closed for a four-week period to enable scheduled repairs to the damaged pool liner to be made. When the liner was removed, however, contractors discovered a more serious leak in the pool tank that will require specialist repairs.

It is the first major defect discovered at any of the six state-of-the-art education and community hubs delivered under the council’s £136 million Investment in Learning Programme.

The campuses have been constructed and are being run in conjunction with Axiom Education, which is investigating to ascertain the full extent of the problem. It is understood to be in talks with the construction company behind the build to rectify the situation.

Until the extent of the required repair works have been identified, Axiom cannot say how long the pool will be closed for.

Perth and Kinross Council said the Breadalbane campus swimming pool had been “signed off as being complete and as having met all of the necessary construction requirements”.

At that time “no issues were identified” and the pool was assessed as meeting all of the necessary design requirements.

A spokeswoman said the defect discovered at Breadalbane was “the first major issue” in respect of any of the community campuses provided by Axiom.

She added: “We appreciate that the pool closure is frustrating for users and will let users know when it will reopen as soon as possible.

“Axiom are working with the construction and maintenance contractors to get the pool repaired and back in use as quickly as we can.”
