One of the biggest names in the history of St Johnstone Football Club has died after a short illness.
Former winger Joe Carr, 83, was a prominent player for the Perth side during the 1950s and early 1960s.
He was inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame two years ago, but was unable to attend the ceremony because of his failing health.
Joe played over a course of nine seasons with St Johnstone between 1953 and 1962.
He features in the top 30 appearance makers for the club and top 20 goal scorers.
He began his career as a junior footballer with Bonnyrigg Rose and signed for Saints after spells with Kilsyth St Patricks and Dunipace.
St Johnstone was his only senior club and in 1961 he was given a deserved testimonial against Falkirk which was attended by 4,200 fans. Although Joe failed to score that night, Saints still won 2-1.
He made a handful of appearances afterwards, before finally bowing out in February 1962.
A spokesman for the club said Joe had scored 70 goals in 230 appearances during his time at Muirton Park. “Our thoughts are with Joe’s family at this sad time,” he said.
A statement on the club’s website said: “A left winger, Joe was extremely popular with the Perth fans.
“Joe was a dab hand from the penalty spot and recorded that one of his favourite memories was scoring against Hibs’ Ronnie Simpson at Easter Road in season 1960-61.”
The club said that when Joe left in 1962, Bobby Kemp was on the Saints’ books and he continued the lineage of good left wingers which was carried on by Fred Aitken.
“None could match Joe in their intensity of their loyalty to St Johnstone,” the club’s biographer said.
