Bereaved woman drove while more than six times legal limit

A former school bus driver who drove while more than six times the legal limit has been banned from the roads.

Morag Hartshorne was caught after a member of the public reported concerns about a vehicle being driven from Stanley to Bankfoot.

When breathalysed, she was found to have 133 mics of alcohol in her system. The legal limit is 22.

At Perth Sheriff Court, Hartshorne admitted driving while over the limit on Main Street, Bankfoot, on April 30.

Depute fiscal Sue Ruton told the court: “The time of this offence was 5pm. Police had received a call indicating that a car was being driven from Stanley to Bankfoot and the driver may be under the influence of alcohol.

“Police attended and saw the car being driven at the locus by the accused.

“The accused was stopped and provided a positive roadside breath test, was arrested and taken into police custody.”

Hartshorne’s solicitor said Hartshorne’s drinking stemmed from the breakdown of a relationship and the death of her mother.

He said: “This has been confirmed medically and she is receiving treatment.”

Sheriff William Wood was also shown a letter from Hartshorne in which she admitted her “horrendous” crime and said she is taking steps to turn her life around.

In sentencing, Sheriff Wood said: “You knew you had an alcohol problem and you decided to drive. Clearly your thinking was somewhat muddled.”

The 50-year-old, of Main Street, Bankfoot, was made the subject of a three-year supervision order and disqualified for 40 months.
