A man is fighting for his life following a serious accident at a driving event in Highland Perthshire.
It’s understood he sustained serious leg injuries while driving in the Scotia Winch Challenge, a 4×4 event.
The casualty had to be airlifted to hospital by search and rescue helicopter after the event’s remote location and bad weather defeated other emergency services.
The accident took place in Griffin Forest near Aberfeldy one of Scotland’s top rallying destinations during this year’s off road event.
Police Scotland said the casualty had sustained a “significant leg injury” in a “very nasty accident”.
An ambulance and the trauma team from Dundee’s Ninewells Hospital were swiftly called to the scene in the wake of the crash.
Once there, however, it became clear that they would be unable to take their vehicles all the way to the scene.
The Scottish Ambulance Service’s heli-med was then called for but unfortunately they too had to call for additional help after assessing weather conditions in Highland Perthshire.
Thankfully, an RAF search and rescue helicopter was able to access the site of the crash and airlift the casualty to safety.
He was then transported to Ninewells for urgent treatment.
Police Scotland said efforts were being made to contact the casualty’s family.
The annual off-road event pits competitors against the rugged Scottish landscape and sees them tackle some of the most testing of wooded hillside locations.
