Music event will aid sisters of Filipino tribal community

Young members of a Filipino tribe will benefit from a night of live music in Perth.
The city’s Corinna nightspot will host a benefit show for the T’boli tribe in the southern Philippines. Money raised from the event will go to two young sisters, Jenjen, 11, and Elisa, 13, and help pay for their basic needs, easing pressure on limited family finances.
The event, Uprise, was put together by Grant McCormick of the non-profit Mother-Tree Foundation.
He said he spent two weeks with the tribal community during a recent stay in south-east Asia.
“Meeting and spending time with these lovely people has inspired my friends and I to organise this fundraising event,” he said.
Most T’boli experience poor living conditions, low income and lack of adequate healthcare. The predominantly peaceful tribe has been caught up in recent political conflicts, while mining and logging operations threaten their way of life.
Uprise, on June 27, will feature music from up-and-coming acts including The Vandals, Ben Hur and Dr Zaius.
