T in the Park gets off to soggy start at Strathallan

The sun has yet to come out for the first full dau of T in the Park.
The sun has yet to come out for the first full dau of T in the Park.

T in the Park’s first year at Strathallan Castle got off to a soggy start as torrential downpours threatened to turn the new site into a mudbath.

The new Perthshire showground, which was blessed with sunshine and blue skies on Thursday, was hit by an overnight deluge which continued throughout the morning.

Revellers have been warned to take umbrellas and wellies to the show which kicks off with first main stage act Prides at 1.30pm.

But the 80,000 fans expected to descend into the 1,000 acre site over the weekend have also been told to bring along sunglasses and sun tan lotion, as conditions are expected to improve throughout the afternoon and over the weekend, although rain is due to return this evening.

In terms of population size, the Strathallan estate will effectively become Scotland’s fifth biggest town this weekend.

T in the Park was forced to quit its old Balado home when health and safety fears were raised about a potentially hazardous underground pipeline.

Organisers secured permission to stage the show at Strathallan in April, after a lengthy planning battle.

Headline acts this year include Noel Gallagher, The Libertines and Twin Atlantic. Festival favourites Kasabian will bring the day one to a close tonight.
