A Muthill drug-taking driver who fell asleep behind the wheel at a petrol station has been jailed for four months.
Tom Devers, of Queensferry Road, was found with saliva dribbling down his face while slumped over the steering wheel after taking the drugs.
Staff at the petrol station, on the A85 road between Crieff and Perth, watched as the 31-year-old stayed sleeping beside the pumps for up to 20 minutes after filling his tank.
They called for police when they could not rouse him. When officers arrived to question him he woke up briefly before falling back to sleep again.
At Perth Sheriff Court yesterday, depute fiscal Bill Kermode stated that when the accused entered the kiosk to pay for his fuel he seemed sleepy and slow.
He said: “The accused went to the van, got in the driver’s seat and put on his hazard lights, but failed to drive away.”
When staff checked on Devers they found him slumped forward against the steering wheel not moving.
When police officers arrived Devers failed to respond and his face had turned a shade of grey.
Devers eventually regained consciousness but appeared disorientated and officers could not understand what he was saying as he was slurring his words so badly.
Devers admitted driving while unfit through drink or drugs on the A85 road at Huntingtower on June 21 last year.
Sheriff Fiona Tait heard that Devers was currently in prison on a separate offence and was due to be released in November.
She banned Devers from driving for three years and sentenced him to four months in jail.
