Sainsbury’s decision not to build store in Pitlochry linked to change in shopping habits
ByPaul Reoch
The decision by a major UK supermarket not to go ahead with building a store in Highland Perthshire was yesterday attributed to a nationwide change in shopping habits.
Sainsbury’s announcement is a blow to Pitlochry and follows on from the supermarket giant pulling the plug on their planned £41 million store in Crieff Road, Perth, last year.
The company said there have been “fundamental changes” to the food market in the country, and claimed this was a contributory factor in their decision.
A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “There is a real shift in the market, with more convenience shopping now, whereby consumers are buying less items in one go and shopping more often through the week.
“We are very disappointed not to be taking our plans forward in Pitlochry, but we can’t proceed with a store that would not work in the longer term.”
