A 43-year-old man has been charged with assaulting spectators at a Tayside under-16s football match.
Police were called to Davie Park, Blairgowrie, where a league match between Monifieth and Blairgowrie 2000 was taking place.
The away side had built up a 6-1 lead and the atmosphere turned sour just minutes before the final whistle was due to blow.
Eyewitnesses alleged there had been a verbal altercation on the touchline between a number of individuals.
Assaults are then said to have taken place, and referee Duncan McLullich felt he had no choice but to abandon the match.
One onlooker said that she was disappointed a youth football match had to be abandoned in such circumstances.
She said: “There was a verbal altercation with some boys, who were watching the game.
“I didn’t see it all but there were certainly two boys on the ground.
“I don’t know what happened to them, but the police were down at the ground and took statements. There was quite a large police presence at one point.
“There wasn’t a bad atmosphere at the game, but it got a bit heated.
“Monifieth were winning 6-1, and there was no reason for anything to happen.”
Referee Mr McLullich said he had been aware of something happening at the side of the pitch. He said: “I’m not 100% sure what happened.
“The incident was behind my back and when we all looked around it was basically over.
“I believe it involved some spectators and it spilled on to the pitch.
“I’ve never seen anything like it before as a referee.”
Monifieth FC Under-16s’ manager Craig Farnan declined to elaborate on the incident.
He said: “I don’t want to comment on it. It is in the hands of the police now.”
A police spokesperson confirmed that a 43-year-old man has been charged in connection with alleged assaults at Davie Park, Blairgowrie, on Sunday and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.
