Workmen who risked their own safety to
rescue a woman and child from a burning
vehicle were hailed as heroes last night.
The pair stopped at the scene of the head-on collision between a car and a pickup on the A93 seven miles from Perth, one mile on the Blairgowrie side of Guildtown.
As the emergency services were summoned the workmen took swift action to assist the badly injured woman and free her and the
child from their vehicle before it burst into flames.
“They were real heroes,” said Perth Station Commander Bob Rearie of Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.
The woman in her 30s suffered serious trauma and injuries to her legs and head in the head on collision between a car and a pick-up.
She is described by the ambulance service as being “in a serious condition” and the condition of the man, also believed to be in his 30s, is currently unknown.
Both vehicles went up in flames after the crash at 5.30pm but the occupants were able to free themselves.
A child, previously reported as being injured in the crash was confirmed to be unhurt by the ambulance service and was not taken to hospital.
Emergency services rushed to the scene including two and the Tayside Trauma Team from Ninewells.
He said: “We received an emergency call to reports of a two vehicle head on collision.
“Two adults, a male and a female, both in their 30s were taken to Ninewells hospital in Dundee.
“The female is in a serious condition and the male’s condition is unknown at this time.
“The woman suffered serious trauma injuries, leg injuries and injuries to the head.
“There was also a young child involved in the accident who was not injured and did not require to go to hospital.”
A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said both the car and pick-up involved in the accident went up in flames.
“Both vehicles were well alight and the occupants were released prior to our arrival.
“Crews used two jets, two hose reels, and two sets of breathing apparatus.”
The fire was extinguished shortly after 6.30pm.
The road is closed between Guildtown and Cargill and drivers are being advised to avoid the area.
