A Perthshire family looked on in horror as their beloved pet dog plummeted down a ravine at a popular beauty spot at the weekend.
The nine-year-old springer spaniel fell more than 60 feet near to the Rumbling Bridge, by Dunkeld, shortly after 4pm on Saturday.
Miraculously, it avoided falling into the foaming waters of the River Braan, instead landing on a narrow ledge by its side.
Following a tense delay in which the dog’s owners feared the animal was lost, they spotted it moving beneath them at the foot of the gorge.
Specialist firefighters were lowered to the foot of the gorge, where, as light faded, they were able to secure the dog and lift it back to the footpath.
The dog’s owner, who had been walking in the area with his wife and daughter, did not wish to be named.
He did, however, heap thanks on the crews who saved his pet.
“It was an incredible operation and I could not be more thankful for the help we received,” he said.
“We enjoy a walk around here every week, but she just darted away, something she never normally does, and lost her footing at the edge of the gorge.
“I had been preparing my family for the worst as we thought she’d fallen into the water and been lost.”
