A pensioner has died after falling out of a first-floor window at his Coupar Angus home.
Doug Bannerman tumbled from his bedroom and was found lying on the ground by a stranger.
Emergency services rushed to the scene but the 85-year-old could not be saved.
Police are not treating the death, which happened last Saturday morning, as suspicious.
Mr Bannerman’s son, Stuart, said it was a mystery as to why his father had opened the window.
He said: “Dad’s got up for whatever reason. He’s maybe been a bit disorientated. He’s opened the bedroom window and for whatever reason he’s fallen out. He’s maybe heard a noise. He’s opened his window and maybe misjudged it, causing him to fall.
“Only my dad will ever know why he got up.
“He lived on his own. He was a very fit and independent man. My auntie Sheila used to pop in and make sure he was OK.
“I’m led to believe it happened at the back of seven in the morning.
“It was a local man walking a dog that found him. At that point, I think he was dead.
“There’s no foul play. The police were happy with their inquiries.”
Stuart added that his father would be greatly missed.
“It’s obviously been a major shock, it’s devastating news,” he said. “I was very close to my dad and we got on great. I thought the world of him.
“It’s been a very upsetting time for the family. My dad was a very popular man.”
A police spokeswoman confirmed they attended the incident but said there were no suspicious circumstances.
She said: “We can confirm that following the death of an 85-year-old man at home in Coupar Angus on Saturday March 29, he has been formally identified. There are no apparent suspicious circumstances and, as with all sudden deaths, a report has been submitted to the procurator fiscal.”
Mr Bannerman was well-known in junior football circles and played for a variety of Perthshire teams, including Coupar Angus, Luncarty, Alyth and Blairgowrie juniors.
In later years, he was a member of Strathmore and Rattray bowling clubs.
Mr Bannerman was born in December 1928 and married wife, Dorothy, in 1966. He had his only child, Stuart, the same year.
He followed his father into the family trade of decorating before he opened a DIY store in the town’s George Street.
Mr Bannerman’s funeral will be held in Coupar Angus’s Abbey Church on Monday.
