T in the Park boss Geoff Ellis has welcomed the results of a new poll which reveals widespread support for the festival’s move to Strathallan Castle.
More than two-thirds of Perthshire households polled said they were backing the show’s controversial relocation bid.
Support appears to be greatest among households living closest to the Strathallan Estate, according to the findings.
More than 1,000 adults across the region were quizzed in the phone poll which was carried out by consultants Survation on behalf of festival promoters DF Concerts.
Plans to move T in the Park to Strathallan have been widely criticised by opponents who believe it will cause traffic chaos and have a harmful effect on wildlife.
They argue it cannot safely go ahead after three protected ospreys were spotted at nests on the site, although RSPB Scotland has said that steps can be taken to safeguard the birds.
On Tuesday, councillors will seal the festival’s fate when they meet to consider DF Concerts’ planning application.
The move has already been backed from Perth and Kinross Council planners.
The poll results showed 62% believe the event should be approved, with 19% against and 19% unsure.
Of those living closest to the site, 70% are in favour with 14% opposing.
Pollsters found that 80% thought TV and other media coverage would be good for the Perth and Kinross region, while 86% agreed that holding T in the Park in the region had a positive impact on the region’s economy.
Residents were also asked about potential congestion, pollution and roads safety fears. A total of 55% of those questioned said they thought DF Concerts’ traffic management plan would address problems on local routes.
And 62% said that “sufficient steps” can be taken to protect the site’s wildlife and environment.
Festival director Geoff Ellis said the results of the survey were clear: “This poll shows that the majority of local people welcome T in the Park and the benefits it will bring to their local communities…
“We are confident that at Tuesday’s meeting the committee will recognise that all measures are in place to ensure a positive future for T in the Park at Strathallan Castle.”
