The city of Perth will mark this year’s Remembrance Day with a series of events next month.
Provost Liz Grant said: “At this time of year it is important to commemorate and give thanks to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice during both world wars and all conflicts since.”
On Friday November 6, Provost Grant will lay a poppy wreath and observe a two minute silence at PoppyScotland’s act of remembrance at the Mercat Cross on King Edward Street.
On Sunday November 8, the provost, councillors, council officers and members of the High Constables of the City of Perth will form the annual civic Remembrance Sunday parade.
Led by Perth and District Pipe Band, the parade will leave from Perth Concert Hall at 10.25am and proceed to St John’s Kirk for the service of remembrance via Mill Street, Kinnoull Street, High Street, King Edward Street and North St John’s Place.
The traditional military parade comprising local veterans, representatives of the Royal Regiment of Scotland and cadets will assemble at Thimblerow car park, off the Old High Street, at 10am and will then march through the city centre to the kirk before the church service begins at 10.45.
The council parade will return to High Street after the service via North St John’s Place, St John Street and High Street. The military parade will march off via St John’s Place, King Edward Street, South Street and Tay Street.
The salute will be taken at the viewpoint at the junction of Tay Street and High Street. On the dais will be Lord-Lieutenant of Perth and Kinross Mel Jameson, Provost Grant, representatives of the Royal Navy, the 51st Highland Regiment and the Royal Air Force.
Finally, on Wednesday November 11, a short remembran,ce service will be held at the 51st Highland Memorial at the North Inch, Perth, at 11am.
The provost along with the Lord- Lieutenant, councillors, the commanding officer of 7 SCOTS, military representatives and veterans associations will assemble where a wreath laying ceremony will take place.
Remembrance Sunday, November 8, will be marked across Perth and Kinross with parades and events in Pitlochry, Coupar Angus, Crieff, Auchterarder and Blairgowrie.
