The teenage son of snooker legend Stephen Hendry has been banned from driving after he was caught drunk at the wheel of a luxury £50,000 car.
Blaine Hendry, 18, complained he had “a limited income” and told a court that he was given just £50 a week allowance by his multi-millionaire father.
The teenager told Perth Sheriff Court the monthly pocket money the former world champion gave him was not enough to cover his transport costs to college.
Hendry, whose address was given as the family home in Auchterarder, admitted driving while he was more than twice the legal alcohol limit.
Fiscal depute Tina Dickie told the court on Tuesday: “He was stopped for a routine check at 3am. He failed a roadside breath test and was taken to Perth police station.”
Solicitor Deborah Russell, defending, said Hendry was a student at college in Alloa and was studying business. She said he had weekly train costs amounting to £85 to attend his course.
“He accepts there is absolutely no defence to what he did and he is extremely apologetic and embarrassed about being here today,” she told the court.
“He has relatively limited means. He lives in Auchterarder and is at college in Alloa. He has to get there by train which costs £17 per day. That is £85 a week to get to college.
“He lives with his mum. He says he receives £200 a month from his father. He would offer to pay any fine at £100 per month. He earns £48 per week from a part time job as a waiter.
“He made an extremely poor decision which he realises is going to impact on him for many years to come. He pled guilty to this at the first opportunity.”
She told the court Hendry had passed his test less than a year before being caught under the influence of alcohol in a BMW X6 XDrive 30D in Commissioner Street, Crieff, on August 16.
Sheriff Fiona Tait told Hendry: “Having regard to the level of the reading you will be disqualified for a period of 18 months.”
She fined him £500 and said the ban would be cut by four months if he passed a driver rehab course.
Stephen Hendry, 47 – who won seven world titles and is estimated to be worth over £10 million – left the family home last year after forming a relationship with an actress.
He left his wife Mandy after 19 years of marriage for Fifi and the Flowertots actress Lauren Thundow, 27 after meeting her during a Snooker Legends Tour.
Hendry became a professional snooker player at 15 and was the youngest man to win the world championship when he did it at the age of 21.
It is not the first time his “limited” financial contribution to a family member has been aired in court in Perth.
When estranged wife Mandy faced a fine over a motoring offence in 2005 she said she was given a limited amount of pocket money by her wealthy husband.
She escaped a ban for speeding after initially telling the court that she had to run the family home on £100 per week.
