Star Wars actor Ewan McGregor has embarked on a new quest to be reunited with his beloved “love bug” Volkswagen Beetle.
The Perthshire-born star has appealed for help to trace the old car, which he bought for £550 while working in a hotel kitchen in his home town of Crieff.
Ewan speaks about his memories of the car in a new documentary, The Bug. He said he would love to see it again, if it hasn’t already been scrapped.
“I am pretty sure it’s gone though,” he told film-makers. “The guy I sold it to took out the engine for his other bug and sold what was left to a guy at our school who I have no contact with anymore.
“It wasn’t road taxed since the early ’90s so it may have been scrapped.”
Ewan began work as a dishwasher at a hotel in Crieff to raise money for his first car. He bought the second-hand vehicle when he was 16, before heading off to study drama in Fife.
“There’s something about being in this little car that is one of my favourite places in the world,” he said in the feature-length film, which is due for release in the summer.
“It has a lot to do with not growing up. Somewhere in me is still that 16-year-old who got his first car and never got over it.”
The 44-year-old also revealed he now keeps a collection of Volkswagen vehicles at his home in California.
