The first phase of a multi-million-pound Perth masterplan project has been approved by councillors, despite thousands of objections.
A controversial new road linking the A85 to the A9 will pave the way for a series of massive housing developments, generating a £500 million boost for the economy.
But St Johnstone FC last night argued the route, which runs through a training ground near McDiarmid Park, could place the club’s future at risk.
A local funeral director said all councillors who voted in favour of the new road, which will go through woodland close to Perth Crematorium, should “hang their heads in shame”.
He said the road will go over a site where hundreds of ashes have been scattered.
Some Perth and Kinross councillors argued that if the road plan was rejected, it would put a halt to a wider scheme involving thousands of new homes on the western side of the city.
The Inveralmond and Bertha Park developments are expected to lead to thousands of jobs and help ease traffic congestion and air pollution issues in other parts of the city.
