A romantic tower that commands views over the Carse of Gowrie and the River Tay is up for sale.
The asking price for Binn Hill Tower near Perth is only £28,000 but any potential purchaser would be taking on a major restoration.
Built for the 14th Lord Gray of Kinfauns in 1815 as an observatory and romantic feature to enhance the dramatic landscape, it is now neglected and decaying.
The B-listed tower is not connected to any services but plans to make it into a four-bedroomed residence have been investigated in the past.
“My dad bought it about 20 years ago from an architect who had plans drawn up to convert it into a home. I still have these plans,” said Sally Carracher from Edinburgh.
“He started to renovate, as he intended to live there, but eventually lost heart as his health started to fail and the tower has been left untouched for quite a number of years and is in a derelict state.
“The woods surrounding the tower are owned by the Forestry Commission and the tower itself is accessible via a forestry track. It has pedestrian right of access in the title deeds.
“It’s now been boarded up for a number of years and is certainly not safe to walk around inside.”
Her father, Gavin Alston, passed away last year and after consulting with estate agents, she decided to place the tower for sale on Gumtree.
“I just thought I would try it. I have had a few inquiries,” she said.
The tower is a much-loved feature and a group of residents is pushing for trees surrounding the structure to be felled to restore the view of the landmark from the A90. They also hope this will improve the views from the adjacent public foot/cycle path over the Carse.
Photographer Angus Findlay, Councillor Gordon Walker and former provost John Hulbert met Matthew Young of the Forestry Commission and were encouraged by his agreement to fell many of the surrounding trees.
“This will restore the view of an important landmark, and improve the attraction of this section of Perth’s woodland walks,” Dr Hulbert said.
