A Perth family whose house was destroyed by flooding claim they have been struck off the housing list after rejecting homes for their disabled daughter.
Angry Stephen and Fiona McLaren live with wheelchair-bound 23-year-old daughter Claire, who suffers from spina bifida.
Last month The Courier told how the family were initially forced to pay full rent to live in their condemned Milne Court flat, which had been badly damaged by flooding from upstairs.
When the council offered them alternative homes in order to carry out repairs, none of the houses were suitable for Claire’s needs.
Mr McLaren explained: “They offered us another two houses designed for over fifties. Fiona went to see them and one had a single bedroom so there was no room for Claire’s two wheelchairs.
“We were then offered one in Milnathort but they couldn’t even get a wheelchair ramp to go in the door of the place.
“We then got a letter from the council stating that because we refused these houses, which were not suitable for Claire, that we have been struck off the list for 12 months.”
Repairs on their Milne Court house have not been completed yet the family have been told they must return.
They have been living in holiday lodges at Bridge of Earn for four weeks, yet for three weeks no work was done on their home.
Mr Mclaren said: “We have got to the stage where we have just had enough of everything that has gone on.
“We were out of the house for three weeks and nothing was done to it. Work only started in the last week as they were running out of time to get everything done.
“Monday morning we’ve to be out of our lodge and the council are saying that we need to get back in.
“Other flats in the block have been totally redecorated by the council whereas ours has only had the ceiling done. We’ve to decorate the walls while we’re there.
“There’s also an electrical cable that has appeared running along one of our walls yet the council claim all the electrical work has been completed. It’s an absolute joke the way we’ve been treated.”
A Perth and Kinross Council spokesperson said that they could not comment on individual circumstances.
