Man jailed for threats to smash ex-partner’s windows

A Perth man was jailed for six months after an early-morning fracas at his ex-partner’s home.

Anthony Smith threatened to smash his former girlfriend’s windows with a rock when she refused to let him inside.

The 33-year-old appeared at a special custody court at Perth police station on Hogmanay and admitted acting in a threatening or abusive manner.

The court heard he had turned up at his ex’s home on Tweedsmuir Road in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Jailing him for six months, Sheriff Lindsay Foulis said: “You were not only disturbing your partner, you were disturbing a lot of other people in the early hours of the morning.”

As he was led away in handcuffs, Smith, of Kinnoull Causeway, said: “I’m sorry for my behaviour.”

Depute fiscal Bill Kermode said that Smith had phoned his ex on Tuesday afternoon and asked if she was at home.

“She said he was not welcome at that address,” he said.

“At about 5am, she was awake when she heard knocking at the rear door.

“She knew it was going to be the accused (Smith) so she just ignored him.”

The court was told neighbours heard Smith swearing and demanding to be let in.

“He began to knock on the living-room window and she looked out and saw him standing in the front garden,” Mr Kermode said.

“She asked him to leave or she would phone the police. Mr Smith picked up a rock and said: ‘Open up or I’ll put everyone of your windows in’.”

Smith asked the court: “Why would I threaten to break my own windows?”

Solicitor Billy Somerville said it had been an empty threat.
