A popular charity run which raises thousands for Cancer Research will not be held in Perth this year, organisers have announced.
The Race for Life event planned for North Inch has been scrapped in an effort to reduce costs and help raise more money for ground-breaking cancer studies.
Charity bosses also said the women-only event did not attract as many participants as expected.
Susan Johnstone, Cancer Research UK national event manager for Scotland, said: “Race for Life raises money to fund life-saving research. So we owe it to our participants and supporters to ensure that we raise as much money as possible in the most cost efficient way.
“Although almost 700 women took part in the both the 5K and 10k events in Perth in July, entries were lower than anticipated.
“Taking the costs of staging the event into consideration, we’ve taken the difficult decision not to run it again in 2016.”
She added: “We are very grateful to our participants and their supporters who took part in the event this year and in the past and we would like to thank Perth and Kinross Council for their support.”
The Race for Life 5K, 10K and Pretty Muddy events will, however, go ahead in Dundee.
Ms Johnstone said: “We want to express our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has taken part in the Race for Life in Perth. It may be possible for the event to return to Perth in future years, but for now we hope our supporters will understand the reason for this difficult decision.”
Race for Life events make millions of pounds each year, helping fund vital life-saving research into 200 types of cancer.
The charity said more people are beating cancer than ever. Survival rates have doubled over the last 40 years and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress.
