Spectator participation was the key to the success of Strathardle Highland Gathering at Bannerfield, Kirkmichael, on Saturday, after judging of the agricultural classes in the morning.
Heavyweight events in the morning were followed by a procession to Bannerfield led by the chieftain, Sir Michael Nairn, and Pipe Major Kevin Douglas and Coupar Angus Pipe Band, and including games officials and competitors.
Sir Michael had a special welcome for the return of the Robertson Cup in the local tug o’ war after a break of a year because of disagreements about residency qualifications.
The Robertson Cup was pushed up the programme and entertained the crowd, Blackwater winning 2-0. The Companion Dog Show, organised by Helen Wilkinson, Blackcraig, Ballintuim, again proved popular and attracted many entries.
A total of £650 was raised for Perth and Kinross ADHD Support Group. Trophies and awards won in the agricultural and industrial sections were handed over by Mrs Alex Winton, Dalmunzie.
Mr Wilkinson said: “The day went very well.
“There was a brief shower of rain early in the morning but it did not last long and everything dried off nicely.
“In any event we had a new stage floor and canopy cover for the Highland dancing which meant we would have been able to keep the dancers in the field.
“As well as the tug o’ war, spectators also enjoyed the heavyweight events, especially the efforts of Lucas Wenta who set a new record in the 56lb weight over the bar of 16ft 6in beating the 16ft set by Darius Slowik, Canada, in 2008.’’
