A country house built as a result of a romantic picnic has gone up for sale.
Balhomie House overlooks the Tay and was originally used as a shooting lodge for Sir Ernest and Lady Moon.
Legend has it the pair had enjoyed an outdoor meal at the spot, with Lady Moon expressing her love of the view.
The C-listed property was completed in 1901 and is on the market for offers over £1.3 million.
The house, which lies south west of Coupar Angus, not far from Cargill, comes with its own orchard and the original glasshouse in the kitchen garden.
Emma Chalmers, head of CKD Galbraith’s agency department in Perth, who is handling the sale, said: “From the period features inside to its extensive gardens and grounds, Balhomie is the quintessential Scottish Country house.
“Conveniently located for both Perth and Dundee, it nevertheless enjoys a secluded and sheltered position overlooking the River Tay.
“In truly excellent condition, it is rare for a property as magnificent as Balhomie to come to the market.”
The brochure for the property describes Balhomie as “very much the Scottish country house”.
It reads: “The exceptional grandeur of the property from the outside is very much mirrored inside with an abundance of beautiful period features remaining throughout the property, including polished wooden floors, panelled doors with original door furniture, ornate cornicing, cast iron radiators and grand fireplaces all complimented by the pleasing scale of each room.
“With an elegant drawing room, double aspect dining room and cosy sitting room there is ample space for entertaining family and guests alike.
“Each of these principal reception rooms is reached from the well- proportioned hall centred on an open fire with attractive mantle and the finely carved sweeping staircase leading to an attractive galleried landing.
“When taking a step outside you are greeted by sweeping lawns and well stocked flower borders, complimenting the stunning Perthshire setting and offering a fantastic backdrop from which to recreate that peaceful picnic that inspired the build of the property all those years ago.”
