New spectator safe zones are being created at the Colin McRae Forest Stages Rally in Perthshire after tragedy struck at another race.
Three people were killed in a crash at last year’s Jim Clark Memorial Rally near Coldstream.
A nationwide review of the sport by a group set up by the Scottish Government made a series of recommendations earlier this year.
As a result, the new zones will come into force to ensure spectator safety when dozens of cars race through central Perthshire woodland over the weekend of October 3 and 4.
Coltness Car Club, who organise the rally, have been working with the Forestry Commission to create one location on the Saturday where spectators can see the cars passing twice, and one area on the Sunday.
Club spokesperson John Fife said: “Under the new guidelines from the motorsport’s governing body, working with the Scottish Government, they would like spectators in place before the rally starts, and then to stay there until all the cars have passed.
“It is a big change. It used to be that people would just wander in and out of the forest. What we’re doing is we are guiding those who don’t know about rallying, or just want specially laid-on facilities, on where to go.”
Exact details of the safety zone locations are expected to be announced next week.
